Drawing on archive images, Philip Hoare, biographer of Stephen Tennant and Noel Coward, examines the artistic and social implications of Rex Whistler’s friendship with the outrageous aristocratic aesthete, Stephen Tennant, and asks: Who influenced who?

Heather Birchall, assistant curator at Tate Britain speaks with slides about Whistler’s 1927 mural in the Tate restaurant, and on his murals in general.

Rex Whistler: A Multi-Faceted Talent

An afternoon symposium on aspects of Rex Whistler’s astonishingly varied creative work. Speakers are

  • Stephen Calloway, curator of Rex Whistler: The Triumph of Fancy, author and curator at the V&A, London

  • Nikki Frater, freelance art historian

  • Alan Powers, Reader in Architecture and Cultural History at the University of Greenwich

A BBC documentary on Whistler’s life and work will also be shown.

An Evening with Rex Whistler

Live music from the period includes works by friends and contemporaries. Enjoy refreshments and a chance to wander in the exhibition at leisure and a guided tour with Stephen Calloway, curator of the exhibition, author and curator at the V&A Museum.
