The Archaeology collection includes significant archaeological material
from Sussex, ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Medieval period,
as well as several large-scale complete excavation archives. The most
important of these is the archive for Whitehawk Neolithic Causewayed
Enclosure, which shows the first evidence for settled communities
in Brighton, some five and a half thousand years ago. Apart from the
regional holdings the collection also houses international material
comprising of Mediterranean pottery and a significant Egyptian collection,
which includes Nubian and Sudanese artefacts. Much of the Egyptian
collection contains artefacts excavated by the famous late nineteenth/early
twentieth century Egyptologists Flinders-Petrie and Griffith.
A selection of items discovered in the Hove area are on display in
Hove Museum & Art Gallery, a highlight of which is the unique
and internationally important Bronze Age Amber Cup, displayed together
with a whetstone, ceremonial axe and dagger, found with the cup in
Hove, in 1856.
