MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Browse objects in the Musical Instruments collection

The Musical Instrument collection includes a large number of wind instruments, several string and monotone instruments and one mechanical instrument – a hurdy-gurdy. The earliest instrument is a late 18th century flute and the most recent is a phono fiddle of the 1930s.

The collection includes, notably, 148 wind instruments, mostly 19th century and European, collected by Mr Spencer over the period 1920-1960 and 454 whistles collected by Mr Willins. The 230 non-European instruments include West African drums and sansas (thumb pianos), South East Asian trumpets, bells and chimes and South American flutes.
