20th Century Art & Design

This gallery explores style and innovation in decorative art from 1880 to the present. Displays of furniture, metalwork, ceramics and glass from Europe and America are grouped by design style.

Mr. Willett’s Popular Pottery

Henry Willett's collection of English ceramics offers a unique view of British history. In this gallery 700 figures, vessels, plates and tiles from 1600-1900 are grouped in 23 themes reflecting political and social history.

James Green Gallery of World Art

Objects from the Museum’s rich world art collections are presented through three themes: Makers features visually striking objects which testify to the skill and invention of their makers. Believers explores how religious belief can transform the meaning and power of an object and Collectors looks at the diverse interests and motivations of five collectors of world art.

Performance Gallery

Puppets, masks, costume and musical instruments celebrate the human capacity for performance throughout the world.

Body Gallery

A fascinating exploration, through objects, of the ways we interpret our own bodies and those of other people. Exhibits range from an ancient Egyptian make-up jar to a Spitting Image puppet.

Fashion & Style

This gallery focuses on key themes of special significance for Brighton: George IV, Internationalism, Renegade and the Collection. Exhibits range from costumes worn at George IV’s coronation to examples of contemporary street style.

Exploring Brighton

The realities of life in Brighton – health, housing, religious and civic life, sports and social life - are explored through the themes Living in Brighton, Working in Brighton, Time to Yourself and Banding Together.

Images of Brighton

Traditional and unconventional aspects of Brighton life are uncovered in this gallery which traces its development from fishing village to cosmopolitan city. ‘Snapshots’ of the beach, the resort, its architecture and varied communities are presented through objects, images, audio and film.

Discovery Gallery

A dramatic display of objects from the Museum’s collections drawn together for children under the themes of Colour and Shape.

Fine Art

Three galleries are devoted to displaying works from the Fine Art collection. Works on paper are regularly rotated in the Prints & Drawings Gallery and important 20th century American pictures are displayed in the Heyer Gallery. Highlights from the collection are displayed in the third gallery.
