Introduction

This portrait by Philip Steegman shows David Horner holding a cigarette in his left hand and wearing a grey suit with a striking red carnation. His wide tie is held with a pearl tie-pin. The artist, Phillip Steegman has carefully chosen the pose and expression so that the portrait displays David Horner's character as well as his physical appearance.

Horner was an extremely chic upper class man of leisure, who spent his time socialising with distinguished members of London and Parisian Society. He was a close friend of the writer Osbert Sitwell who once described him as 'orchidaceous', like a tropical flower. Horner was renowned for his willowy good looks, studied wit and cosmopolitan style.
