Introduction This painting depicts the landscape around Ben Nicholson's house, Bankshead in Cumberland. It was painted in 1930 and was given to the painter Christopher Wood, who was a close friend and important influence on Nicholson, shortly before Wood died in the same year. The picture is painted in a naive style and depicts a simple landscape and sky in blocks of colour. A small white farmhouse stands on a hill with trees on either side with fields below.
