Introduction

This is a group of ten blouses made between 1900 and 1914, worn by Marion Sambourne. The blouses, which would have been worn in the day, include six made of white cotton lace, three of these are embroidered in white thread with 'M. Sambourne'. Two of the blouses are trimmed with black and white silk ribbon and bows. One of the blouses is made of light pink satin and lace trimmed with black ribbon. There are also two silk blouses, one of which was made by Debenham & Freebody (now Debenhams) a fashionable department store that opened on Oxford Street in London in 1909, the makers of the other blouses are unknown.

These blouses are part of the Messel Dress Collection, which includes six generations of one family’s clothes dating from 1870 - 2005.
