Introduction | William Eglinton | Mary Burchett

This photographic print shows Mary Burchett seated beneath a white cross and the name 'Ada'. The photograph has been mounted on gold-edged card in the cabinet format. The front bears the monogram 'V'. The reverse bears a handwritten note from Burchett. The reverse also bears a pentacle accompanied by the numerals 'II'.

This photograph is an example of spirit photography. The note on the reverse claims the photograph was taken by William Eglinton, a famous medium of the late 1800s. Although Burchett's body has a see-through quality, the ghostly manifestation pictured here is the lettering above her head. The name 'Ada' may refer to a recently deceased person.
