Introduction

This glass dragonfly, "Grande Libellule", is a car mascot designed by Rene Lalique around 1929.

Lalique's car mascots or hood ornaments were designed to be fitted to the scuttle of a car, the bonnet or radiator cap. Made of clear glass they could be lit from beneath and coloured by a disc inserted between the mascot and light. Discs, priced 6d each, came in red, green, blue, mauve, amber and white. This mascot is used to illustrate the history of modern design.
