Introduction

This pendant, in the form of a broad Maltese cross, was made by Rene Lalique, a leading French designer of jewellery and glass ware. During The first World War he manufactured tokens to promote and raise funds for various charities. This piece, stamped with a crouching female figure sheltering children and inscribed 'Orphelinat des armees', was to support army orphans.
