Hair ornament from Gablonz, circa 1900, in the shape of a dragonfly. Made from opals, plique-a-jour enamel in lemon, pink and dark green and faceted quartz.

There are several pieces from Germany and Austria, including a walking-stick handle cast (once again) as a womans head entwined with foliage. This was made by Wenzel Brezina of Vienna. A crude but vigorous piece is the dragonfly ornament, equipped with a vicious twin-pronged clasp, made in Gablonz in Bohemia around 1900. Gablonz was well known for its mass-produced designs which were plagiarised from all over Europe, and this piece, which may be a hair ornament or brooch, may be based on a more refined prototype. It is made of expensive materials, however-silver gilt set with opals, and a faceted quartz.
