  Composition

Doll with Composition Body

Composition became a popular material to make dolls from, as it was cheap and easy to produce. The basic method involved a pulped wood mixture that was moulded under pressure into the required shape. The mould was then varnished and painted. As the process developed it became the first mass-produced by machinery. Many manufacturers had their secret formulas these included adding china, cloth or wax.
