  Performance Gallery

Noh mask, Buffoons mask

Inspired by Brighton Museum & Art Gallery's outstanding holdings of performance related material from around the world, Performance Gallery opened in 2002 as part of a major museum redevelopment project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Introduction

Public performances happen all over the world.

They inspire us to make spectacular things - costumes, masks, puppets, instruments and images.

These objects are used with fantastic stories, histories, music or dance to transport us for a time to imaginary worlds.

Performance Gallery displays some of the things left behind when the show is over.

There are several ways you can explore this gallery:

Mask from Les Ballets 1933 View the objects by theme Puppets or People
Burning of the clocks costume Consider performance as Spectator, as Performer, or for the Maker of the objects
boy's fancy dress costume Find out more about making Performance Gallery at Brighton
