  Performers, Spectators and Makers

Egungun performers and spectators

Performance happens in every culture around the world. It takes place in public places of worship, in theatres, on the streets, in town squares, in our homes. It requires people: those who transform themselves and those who watch. It also requires those who make the costumes, the masks, the instruments, the puppets, the ritual objects.

Performance gallery explores the roles of performers, spectators and makers.

We are all performers. Use museum objects to explore ideas about being a performer: superstars, stagefright, greasepaint and blisters.
Punch and Judy Booth on the beach, 1930, with crowd of children Spectators
Everyone is a spectator. Use museum objects to evoke different memories and ideas about this personal act of observing, absorbing, applauding or transforming a performance.
Marionette maker, U Lu Maw Makers
Performance is transitory, it is the objects left over from performance which have entered museum collections, and often become the only trace of the performance. Performance Gallery considers the Makers of these objects who transform people for public display
