I Mourn... Introduction

From the earliest times the rituals of grieving for the dead have included the wearing of tokens.
Some contain an image of the deceased, others an actual part of them. In the west we have taken the colour (or absence of colour) black to represent our grief and black materials such as jet have become as symbolic as the forms they are carved into. Public displays of grief have changed in Britain. Compare the outpuring of grief for Princess Charlotte with the more muted showing for Princess Diana.
