A general introduction to Africa and studying cultures other than our own. The pack includes:

Loan Service

Natural History Specimens Loans - Booth Museum of Natural History
We can loan you a variety of items from our collections such as birds, mammals, insects, fossils and shells. Loans are available for collection between 2pm – 4.30pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. Loans cannot be booked in advance. A charge of £3 is made for each loan for one calendar month.

School Loan Boxes
Handle history in your classroom with objects from Brighton & Hove Museums’ collection.

These unique resources provide an opportunity to gain an insight into different cultures by studying real objects. They enable students to make deductions about societies, cultures, collectors, beliefs, and customs through close observation and discussion.

Boxes to hire:
Mask 1+2 – masks from around the world
Performance - a range of objects such as masks, puppets, theatre programmes and small percussion instruments
Kettles – explore the history of design and materials

Each loan box contains information about the subject and each object, lesson ideas, curriculum links and images.

Pre-School Loan Boxes
Borrow a box full of history from Brighton & Hove Museums.

These unique resources support the foundation stage by promoting a sense of time and/or culture which underpins the ‘knowledge and understanding of the world’ early learning goal.

Each loan box contains a selection of themed artefacts, object information, suggested activities and story books to stimulate the imagination of under 5s. Each box contains a training video showing a museum teacher demonstrating how to handle the objects and how to structure and lead a session.

Boxes to hire:
India – contemporary everyday objects from India
Playtime – a range of useable replica and original Victorian toys
At Home – everyday Victorian household objects
Historical Children’s Clothing - discover how children dressed 100 years ago
Washday – do your weekly laundry the Victorian way with possers and dolly tubs

How to book:

  • Loan boxes are kept at Preston Manor where there are ample parking facilities
  • Loans must be collected on Fridays and returned on Tuesdays 10am-4.30pm
  • They can be hired for three weeks - £6.50 per loan

Brighton History Centre

Located on the first floor of Brighton Museum & Art Gallery the Brighton History Centre provides access to:
census returns, street directories, parish registers, newspapers and periodicals dating back to 1749, nearly 50,000 photographs, oral histories of local people and much more.
